Key Facts

  • OHC certification requires a 20-hour CAOHC-approved course
  • Certification is valid for 5 years; recertification requires an 8-hour course
  • Required by OSHA 1910.95 when a non-physician/audiologist conducts audiometric testing
  • Also certifies Course Directors and Professional Supervisors of the Audiometric Component

The Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) is a non-profit organization that certifies Occupational Hearing Conservationists (OHCs) to perform audiometric testing for workplace hearing conservation programs. Under OSHA's Occupational Noise Exposure standard (29 CFR 1910.95), audiograms must be administered by a licensed audiologist, otolaryngologist, other physician, or a technician certified by CAOHC (or who has demonstrated competence to an audiologist or physician). OHC certification requires completion of a 20-hour CAOHC-approved course covering anatomy of the ear, audiometer operation, calibration checks, audiogram interpretation, and recordkeeping. Certification is valid for 5 years and renewed via an 8-hour recertification course. For occupational-health clinics, having CAOHC-certified staff is the practical path to running audiograms in-house rather than referring out.
