Key Facts

  • Required after any DOT drug or alcohol violation
  • Must complete full SAP evaluation and treatment first
  • Drug test must be directly observed; result must be negative
  • Minimum 6 follow-up tests in first 12 months after return

After a DOT drug or alcohol violation, the employee must complete the SAP evaluation process, follow all SAP treatment/education recommendations, and receive a return-to-duty recommendation from the SAP before taking a return-to-duty test. The test must be directly observed (for drug tests) and the result must be negative (drugs) or below 0.02 (alcohol) before the employee can return to safety-sensitive functions. After return to duty, the employee is subject to unannounced follow-up testing for at least 12 months (minimum 6 tests in the first year).
