Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) are physicians who have been designated by the FAA to conduct medical examinations for airman medical certification. AMEs perform Class 1 (airline transport pilots), Class 2 (commercial pilots), Class 3 (private pilots), and BasicMed exams. Senior AMEs can issue all classes of certificates; regular AMEs may be limited to certain classes. AMEs follow FAA examination protocols specified in the Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners. Examination results are submitted electronically to the FAA's Aerospace Medical Certification Division.
