Breath alcohol testing is the DOT-approved method for workplace alcohol screening under 49 CFR Part 40. Testing must be conducted by a trained Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) using an approved Evidential Breath Testing device (EBT). A screening test result of 0.02 or higher requires a confirmation test. A confirmed result of 0.02-0.039 requires the employee to be removed from safety-sensitive functions for at least 24 hours. A result of 0.04 or higher is a DOT violation requiring SAP referral.
