Clearinghouse Query
An employer search of the FMCSA Clearinghouse database to check a CDL driver for drug/alcohol violations, available as full or limited queries.
Key Facts
- Full query: shows all violation records — requires driver consent
- Limited query: shows only whether violations exist — no consent needed
- Pre-employment full query required before hiring CDL drivers
- Annual limited query required for all current CDL employees
- Both query types available through the FMCSA web portal
Employers with CDL drivers must conduct Clearinghouse queries to verify employees do not have unresolved drug/alcohol violations. A full query reveals all violation details and requires the driver's electronic consent; it is mandatory before allowing a new employee to perform safety-sensitive functions. A limited query reveals only whether a record exists (yes/no) and does not require individual consent when covered by a general consent. Employers must conduct a limited query at least once every 12 months for each currently employed CDL driver. If a limited query returns "yes," the employer must conduct a full query within 24 hours.
