Under FMCSA regulations, a CMV is any vehicle used in interstate or intrastate commerce that: has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 lbs or more; is designed to transport 9+ passengers for compensation or 16+ passengers not for compensation; or transports hazardous materials in reportable quantities. CMV operators are subject to DOT physical requirements, drug/alcohol testing programs, Hours of Service regulations, and driver qualification standards. Different CDL classes correspond to different CMV types.
