OSHA 10 / 30 (OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour Training)

Voluntary OSHA Outreach Training Program courses (10-hour for workers, 30-hour for supervisors) that teach workplace hazard recognition.

Key Facts

  • Voluntary OSHA Outreach Training Program — not the same as OSHA agency enforcement
  • OSHA 10 = entry-level worker awareness; OSHA 30 = supervisor / safety lead curriculum
  • Separate Construction (29 CFR 1926) and General Industry (29 CFR 1910) tracks
  • Cards issued by authorized OSHA Outreach trainers; no formal federal expiration but many states/employers require 3–5 year refresh
  • Required by several states and many construction GCs as a condition of site access

The OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour Training courses are part of OSHA's voluntary Outreach Training Program, designed to teach workers and supervisors about workplace hazards and their rights under the OSH Act. The 10-hour course targets entry-level workers and covers a baseline of hazard recognition; the 30-hour course targets supervisors, safety committee members, and others with safety responsibility and includes deeper instruction on OSHA standards, recordkeeping, and program management. Each course has separate Construction Industry (based on 29 CFR 1926) and General Industry (29 CFR 1910) curricula — and a worker needs the correct track for their work. Courses are delivered by authorized OSHA Outreach trainers (in-person or, for some content, online); successful completion yields a Department of Labor wallet card. OSHA itself does not set a federal expiration on the card, but many state regulations (e.g., New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Nevada, Missouri) and most large general contractors require an OSHA 10 (or 30) card as a condition of site access and refresh it every 3–5 years. For occupational-health clinics, the OSHA 10/30 is rarely delivered in-house but is a frequent topic on intake forms and pre-placement questionnaires.
