An Occupational Medicine Physician is a medical doctor who specializes in the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. Board certification is through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) with a specialty in Occupational Medicine, often affiliated with the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). These physicians perform DOT physicals, fitness-for-duty evaluations, independent medical examinations (IMEs), medical surveillance exams, and return-to-work evaluations. Many also serve as Medical Review Officers (MROs) for drug testing programs. They are experts in toxicology, industrial hygiene, epidemiology, and regulatory compliance.
